You don't need to teach — just play and talk about where things are. These zero-prep activities use blocks, boxes, and your own body to build the position words and shape skills behind the Junior Starter (Ages 4–6) puzzles.
During evening clean-up, your child stuffs blocks back into the box one by one. One block won't fit, so they turn it and try again — and in it goes. That moment is spatial reasoning in action. The phrase sounds big, but for a 4–6-year-old it comes down to small things: which piece fits which hole, how to turn it so it lines up, whether a toy sits inside or outside the box, how to crawl out from under the mat.
Research offers one careful but useful signal. In an observational study, the more spatial words parents used while building blocks with their children (up, down, beside, through), the better those children later scored on spatial tests — the two are associated, not causally linked (Block Talk, 2011). "Associated" is the right word here, not "smarter." What the finding really says is modest: saying position words while you play is worth trying, and it costs almost nothing.

1. Your Role: Play Along and Say Position Words
At ages 4–6, children don't make sense of space through rules — they make sense of it through your words. So your role isn't to teach. It's to play along and say position words. The one line to remember:
You don't need to teach — just play and talk about where things are.
This is very different from the activities for ages 6–8. That set runs on rule games — tangrams, grid copying, paper folding — where a child can work out the rules and play alone for a long stretch. This set doesn't run on rules; it runs on the few sentences you say beside them. So every activity below assumes you're nearby, and the materials are things you already have: boxes, blocks, and your own body. Zero prep, 5–10 minutes, and you can stop anytime.

- Materials: A small toy (a bear or doll), a cup, and a chair.
- How to play: Give the command — "put the bear on top of the cup, tuck it into the cup, hide it under the chair" — and your child follows. Then swap roles: your child gives the commands and you follow.

- Materials: A pile of blocks.
- How to play: Build together while you casually say position words — "this block goes on the left," "go under and through," "turn it and place it." Your child doesn't need to answer.
- What it practices: Spatial-language input — the easiest, most doable move at this age.

- Materials: Two or three small toys, paper, and a pen.
- How to play: Hide the toys around the room, then draw a very simple map — a few squares for furniture plus an arrow — and let your child follow it to find them. When they're stuck, drop position-word hints.
- What it practices: Shifting perspective (bird's-eye view ↔ the room), symbols, and spatial language.

- How to play: Build simple silhouettes — a house, a cat, a car. Copy an outline first, then create freely and describe it: "This piece is the roof."
- What it practices: Fit, mental rotation (flipping and turning to find the angle), and shape composition.

- Materials: Sofa cushions and boxes. Safety: pick a clear indoor area, keep the cushions steady, and stay nearby.
- How to play: Build a "tunnel + climb-over" route. Crawl through, climb over, and duck out, asking as you go, "Did you go over it or under it?"
- What it practices: Body-space awareness (your body in relation to space) and spatial language (up, down, through).

4. Age Tips
- Around age 4: one activity at a time, and five minutes is plenty. Stick to the most common position words — on, in, under — and point with your finger as you say them. For shape matching, start with big pieces in clearly different shapes.
- Ages 5–6: add a little variety — copy-a-model, treasure maps, simple tangrams — and widen the position words to beside, through, left, right.
These are descriptive observations, not standards every child has to meet. If your child isn't there yet, just try again later.
5. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long should we play each day?
A: A few minutes is enough. Every activity here is built to finish in 5–10 minutes and to stop whenever you want. Following your child's interest matters more than hitting a fixed length.
Q: Do we need to buy special toys?
A: No. Boxes, blocks, cups, sofa cushions, and a soft ball — things you already have — cover everything. The only things worth owning are big shape pieces or a big-piece puzzle, and even then, pick large pieces with no small parts.
Q: What if my child doesn't like puzzles?
A: Don't push — take a different route. Some children prefer to move (the tunnel crawl, ball rolling), and some prefer to follow commands (position-word commands, Simon says).
