Parents often want to know whether spatial skills can change with practice.
A useful short answer is: research reviews suggest that spatial skills can improve with training, but that statement has limits. It does not mean every activity produces the same result. It does not mean a short puzzle session creates a broad outcome. It does not mean KidSpatial has been tested as an intervention.
This Evidence Note keeps the claim deliberately small.
The source, in plain language
A 2013 meta-analysis by David Uttal and colleagues reviewed research on training spatial skills. A meta-analysis combines results from many studies to look for patterns across a research area.
The authors reported that spatial skills are malleable and that training effects can be sizable and durable in the studies they reviewed. They also discussed transfer: whether practice on one kind of spatial task relates to performance on another kind of task.
For a parent, the useful takeaway is not “one activity fixes everything.” It is more modest:
Spatial skills are not frozen. Practice can matter, especially when the activity gives a child concrete spatial work to do.
What practice looks like in a puzzle
In a KidSpatial puzzle, practice is not a drill counter. It is a sequence of visible attempts:
- compare a piece with an open space;
- turn the piece and see what changes;
- try a placement;
- inspect the space that remains;
- choose the next small move.
That kind of practice gives the child repeated contact with spatial relationships. The board shows information after each move.
Why “more practice” is not the whole answer
Practice can be useful without being rushed.
If a child is stuck, pushing for many more tries may make the puzzle feel noisy. A better home question is:
“Can we make the next try smaller?”
That might mean trying one piece in one opening, turning it once, or comparing only two possible spaces.
Small practice is still practice. It gives the child a manageable comparison instead of a full-board problem.
What the research does not let us claim
The 2013 review does not test KidSpatial. It does not show that any particular puzzle app improves school performance. It does not tell a parent exactly how long a child should practice at home.
It also does not mean every spatial activity works equally well for every child.
The responsible claim is narrower: the research literature includes evidence that spatial skills can respond to training. KidSpatial uses that idea as a design reason to offer short, concrete spatial puzzles, not as a promise about outcomes.
What a parent can watch
Instead of counting how many puzzles a child finishes, watch the quality of the next try:
- Did the child compare the piece with the open space?
- Did the child notice a turn changed the direction?
- Did the child use a previous try to make the next try smaller?
- Did the child inspect what remained after a placement?
Those observations stay close to the actual puzzle. They do not require a parent to measure a skill.
Try one practice loop
Open one free puzzle and use this loop:
- Choose one piece.
- Choose one open space.
- Try one direction.
- Look at what happened.
- Decide one smaller next try.
Stop after a few moves if the child is done. A short, calm practice moment is enough for a home session.
