A step-by-step guide from first symbols to real-life navigation
Reading a map means matching the symbols on paper to the street in front of you, in your head. That's real-world spatial reasoning — the same ability as fitting "a shape into a shape" in a puzzle, and the core of visual-spatial skills here on KidSpatial.

- What it practices: Ordered pairs (x, y) and "horizontal first, then vertical."

#### Activity 11: Reading a Map on a Real Trip (about 7–10)
- Materials: A paper map and one real trip.
- How to play: Before leaving, look at the map (where are we, where to). Along the way, ask: "Left or right up ahead? Which landmark did we pass?"

#### A note to keep the pressure off (not an activity)
A child who isn't great at finding the way isn't "not independent enough." 3. A Parent Observation Checklist
No scoring, no correcting while you play. These are things you can notice, not requirements:
- Does your child use direction words on their own (in front, on the left, north)?
- When reading a map, do they check the key first, or point at random?
- When drawing, do they look first then draw, or draw from memory?
- Can they move from "matching the real thing" to "just reading the map"?
- When wrong, do they self-correct or ask for help right away?
- Do they keep returning to one block? That's often their natural entry point.
