A KidSpatial puzzle begins with a board, a target area, and a small set of pieces. The practical question is concrete:
How can these pieces fill the target area without leaving gaps, overlapping another piece, or crossing the edge?
We can describe that question through four comparisons a child can see on the board.
The puzzle’s job, in plain language
The screen shows the target area and the pieces available for that puzzle. The goal is to place the pieces so they fill the target. A piece can be selected, turned, moved, and tried in a different position.
A family does not need to know the phrase “spatial reasoning” before beginning. On KidSpatial, the visible task is simpler to describe: compare a piece with the space still open, notice its direction, try a fit, and inspect what remains.
Four things a child is comparing
1. The shape of a piece
Each piece has straight edges, corners, and a particular arrangement of squares. Those details determine which parts of the target it might occupy.
A piece does not have to be given a formal shape name. The relevant comparison is between the space covered by the piece and the space available on the board.
2. The shape of the space still open
At the beginning, the whole target is open. After a piece is placed, the remaining open space has a new outline.
A long opening, an inside corner, or a small pocket will not match every piece. The child may compare one piece with several openings, or look at one opening and scan the pieces for a similar shape.
3. The direction of a piece
Turning a piece changes its direction, not its size or its parts. A piece that does not match an opening in one direction may match after it turns.
KidSpatial lets the child turn a piece and check it on the board. The comparison does not have to happen entirely in the child’s head before a move is made.
4. The space a placement leaves behind
A piece can fit one part of the target while changing the options for the pieces that remain. After every placement, there is a new outline to inspect.
This makes the puzzle more than a series of separate piece-to-space matches. Each placement also changes the next comparison.
What the board shows after a try
A placement may create one of several visible results:
- The piece stays inside the target and does not overlap another piece.
- Part of the piece crosses the target edge.
- The piece overlaps space already occupied by another piece.
- The piece fits where it was placed, but the remaining opening does not seem to match the pieces left.
These results do not need to be turned into a score. They are information about the current arrangement. A piece can stay where it is, be moved, or be turned and checked again.
What a parent is actually watching
From outside the puzzle, the moves may look like simple dragging and turning. The board, however, is asking the child to make visible comparisons:
- piece to open space;
- one direction to another;
- the current opening to the pieces left;
- the board before a placement to the board after it.
A parent may see a child move quickly, pause over one piece, turn the same piece several times, or return to an earlier placement. This guide does not treat those actions as scores or proof of a particular outcome. They are simply different ways of interacting with the comparisons available in the puzzle.
